Elections-1

Our recommendations for City Council members

IOCI has made local Christchurch election recommendations for each of the last three elections.

We examine the voting records of incumbents and make judgements on their ward presence, knowledge of issues, attendance and independent thinking. We also interview voters via phone or in person . IOCI then makes this information available to a diverse panel to select whom we should recommend as city councillors and mayor.

In some cases, the panel may not make recommendations or recommend only one person in a ward where two are to be selected. If that is the case the voter can pick from a choice of acceptable candidates.

For the first time, we are making note of incumbents we think should not be considered based on their voting records and public comments made while in office.

– MAYOR –

IOCI endorses LIANNE DALZIEL. Her background, parliamentary experience, vision and understanding of problems in Christchurch are clearly second to none. She will make considerable progress in bringing key groups together, understanding our financial position and writing a job description for a new City Manager.

She will do so by inclusion not exclusion, in public view not public excluded and by listening far more than talking. She will also do this with a finely tuned ability to laugh with others and at herself when needed.

Paul Lonsdale is acceptable as a mayoral choice. IOCI feels, however, he can play a far more valuable role as a city councillor (see endorsement that follows).

– COUNCILLORS –

SHIRLEY/PAPANUI: IOCI endorses ALI JONES. IOCI finds both Jonathan Corfe and Pauline Cotter as good choices to vote for after Ali Jones. IOCI strongly recommends not voting for Ngaire Button or Aaron Keown based on their poor voting records and performance. In Keown’s case holding two elected positions at the same time is unacceptable.

FENDALTON/WAIMAIRI: IOCI endorses RAF MANJI and FAIMEH BURKEIOCI strongly recommends not voting for Jamie Gough, Claudia Reid and Mike Wall. Each has consistently voted for the Parker/Marryatt Agenda including pay rises for Marryatt.

BURWOOD/PEGAGUS: IOCI endorses GLENN LIVINGSTONE. IOCI finds both Robyn Nuthall or David East acceptable choices after Glenn.

HAGLEY/FERRYMEAD: IOCT endorses YANI JOHANSON and PAUL LONSDALE

RICCARTON/WIGRAM: IOCI endorses VICKI BUCK and JIMMY CHEN

SPREYDON/ HEATHCOTE: IOCI endorses ERIN JACKSON. IOCI finds both Tim Scandrett or Phil Clearwater acceptable choices after Erin.

BANKS PENINSULA: IOCI has no endorsement recommendation. However we find all candidates to be acceptable.
